Company Centre Nijkerk Project, Nijkerk, The Netherlands (Scale model, 1:200)
Ben van Berkel
Dutch, born 1957
1992
A scale model in aluminum, wood, and Plexiglass that presents Ben van Berkel’s proposal for a Company Centre, in which he explores a smooth, shiplike volume with carved roof openings to organize light, circulation, and program.
Up close it reads like a low, floating hull on a neutral wooden plinth—muted metal surfaces, precise slots and a central raised element suggest skylights, entrances, and an internal flow of movement.
Dating from 1992, the model exemplifies van Berkel’s early interest in fluid, movement-focused architecture and the hands‑on use of tactile models to test complex, sculptural forms that anticipated later parametric and program-driven design approaches.
