Duplicate of plate (page 52) from Gloria
Alex Katz
American, born 1927
2005
A small, square etching from Alex Katz’s supplementary suite for the illustrated book Gloria in which the artist reduces a woman’s profile to a few cool, decisive lines to convey her presence.
Set into a large white sheet, a dark, near-monochrome square holds a spare, luminous outline of a side profile—flat tonal fields and economy of contour make the face feel both intimate and stylized.
The print shows Katz’s signature flattening of form and economy of line, translating his modern portraiture into printmaking and highlighting how minimal graphic gestures can register contemporary identity and reproducibility.
