Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper Project, Berlin-Mitte, Germany (Floor plan)
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
American, born Germany. 1886–1969
1921
An ink-on-tracing-paper architectural floor plan by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that imagines a triangular skyscraper organized around a round central core with radiating wing-like floor plates to manage circulation and program.
What strikes you first are the spare, ultra-precise ink lines: a sharp triangular site contains a circular hub from which five faceted wings extend, creating a rhythmic play of solid and empty space and a clear, geometric order.
This 1921 study captures Mies’s early commitment to geometric rigor and structural clarity—ideas that helped propel modernist high-rise design and anticipate the principles of the International Style.
