Riffs on Real Time
Leslie Hewitt
American, born 1977
2002-05
A chromogenic print in which Leslie Hewitt photographs a handwritten notebook page with a small pasted family snapshot set on a green shag carpet, staging everyday ephemera to examine how images and text make and hold memory.
What hits you first is the tiny, faded square photograph pinned to the ruled page—its glossy color contrasts with pencil scrawls, doodles, and the deep, tactile green of the carpet so that texture, scale, and layered marks feel like memory made visible.
Part of a contemporary move to treat photographs as archival objects, the work bridges still life, conceptual photography, and personal archive to rethink how private histories are composed, preserved, and read.
