25 plates from Untitled (Xerox Book)
Robert Morris
American, 1931–2018
1968
An artist’s book of offset lithographs in which Robert Morris translates xerographic, photocopy-like circular impressions into pictorial traces that explore the materiality of mechanical reproduction.
You notice at once a pale, map-like round print—marbled, weathered swirls that read like a distant planet—clearly inked on the right page with a ghostly transfer visible on the thin left page and the book’s shadow emphasizing its physical presence.
By presenting serial, machine-made images in book form, Morris blurred the line between original and copy and helped bring process-driven, reproducible techniques into the language of Minimalist and Conceptual art, expanding what printmaking and artists’ books could be.
