"Rocket"
Roman Signer
Swiss, born 1938
1980
A two-minute silent Super 8 film (presented as video) in which Roman Signer stages a small rocket-like jet of smoke in an emptied room to turn a simple physical intervention into a sculptural, time-based event.
The grainy, sunlit interior is arrested by a white, comet-like plume arcing from a coiled hose, transforming an ordinary room into a moment of sudden motion, tension, and quiet absurdity.
Signer’s work bridges sculpture, performance, and experiment—using everyday objects and controlled forces to make time, energy, and chance visible and to push sculpture toward durational, process-driven practices.
