Vase, Versailles
Louis-Rémy Robert
French, 1811–1882
1853
A mid-19th-century albumen silver print by Louis‑Rémy Robert that records a sculpted garden urn at Versailles, made to capture and present its ornamental detail and classical character.
The urn fills the frame, its carved garlands and a small reclining figure rendered in warm sepia against a softly blurred garden, so the stone’s texture and silhouette read like a solitary portrait.
As an early photographic study of sculpture and architecture, it shows how albumen printing helped document and disseminate images of cultural heritage, shaping nineteenth‑century views of the past.
