Chair Series 7 (3107)
Arne Jacobsen
Danish, 1902–1971
c. 1952
A lightweight modernist chair made of molded plywood with a black lacquer finish set on chrome‑plated steel tubing, intended to reduce seating to a single elegant, ergonomic silhouette.
Its sensuous, hourglass silhouette—reminiscent of a small black butterfly—strikes you first, the continuous curve of seat and back gleaming smoothly while thin chrome legs make the form appear to float.
A postwar design classic, Jacobsen’s Series 7 showed how molded plywood and industrial production could create refined, stackable, and widely accessible modern furniture, influencing generations of designers.
