George Brecht
American, 1926–2008
c. 1966
A sewn fabric flag with metal grommets bearing the word “Start,” in which Brecht converts a utilitarian signal into a spare Fluxus gesture that prompts action or reflection.
Pale, elongated letters dominate a square of deep red cloth, hanging slightly askew from a simple pole so the single word reads as a bold, tactile command that seems to hover in the space.
Rooted in the Fluxus idea of art as instruction and everyday event, this work reduces language and objecthood to a minimalist prompt that questions how artworks initiate participation and meaning.
