Your Name Spelled with Objects: George Brecht
George Maciunas
American, born Lithuania. 1931–1978
1976
A compact Fluxus multiple: a metal cigar box containing an offset card and an assortment of found objects that Brecht arranged so viewers could 'spell' a name with things, turning identity into a playful conceptual provocation.
Opening it reads like a tiny cabinet of curiosities—an orange, a pinecone, an egg, wooden pieces and glassy fragments set against worn cigar-label graphics, their varied colors and textures feeling like a tangible alphabet.
Part of Fluxus’s questioning of art’s boundaries, this piece uses everyday objects and chance to dematerialize authorship and show how meaning and identity can be made from ordinary materials.
