Thank You Call Again
George Brecht
American, 1926–2008
1962
A small Fluxus assemblage by George Brecht that fixes a printed matchbook—its inked “Thank You / Call Again” slogan—onto a hand‑formed blob of plaster, turning throwaway commercial ephemera into a quiet sculptural gesture.
The retro red‑and‑blue graphic immediately commands attention—its oval “Thank You” hovering over the matchbook’s strip of black strike surface as the card sits slightly askew on a white, imperfect lump of plaster with a hint of tarnished metal peeking from behind, making the familiar advertisement feel oddly intimate and fragile.
Created in 1962, this work exemplifies Fluxus’s use of everyday objects to subvert artistic conventions and authorship, inviting viewers to discover poetic or ironic meaning in ordinary commercial detritus and helping pave the way for later conceptual and found‑object art.
