Francis Alÿs
Belgian, born 1959
2002
An offset-printed poster by Francis Alÿs that compresses his 2002 participatory project 'Cuando la fe mueve montañas' into a pale photographic view of a Peruvian hill, meant to document and announce a collective, symbolic intervention at the III Bienal de Lima.
You notice a hushed, expansive sky above a low, undulating ridge rendered with faint chromatic doubling and visible fold creases, while a large, airy title floats across the top like a gentle proclamation.
By turning a site-specific, participatory action into a printed image, the work shows how Alÿs translates modest, poetic gestures into reproducible media to probe collective agency, political imagination, and the circulation of public art.
