Untitled
Francis Alÿs
Belgian, born 1959
2001
A storyboard-like sequence of graphite and ink sketches on vellum in which Alÿs diagrams the choreography of people, cars, and camera movements as preparatory notes for a filmed urban action.
A loose grid of tiny, energetic vignettes—little walking figures, cars, arrows and scrawled directions—whose faint handwriting and quick, gestural marks make the page read like a map caught mid-motion.
The drawing shows how Alÿs bridges drawing, cinema, and performance to convert everyday streets into staged, ephemeral events, revealing the careful planning behind seemingly spontaneous public interventions.
