A small drawing in gouache and synthetic polymer paint on graph paper in which Lawrence Weiner arranges two simple, rotated color blocks to present a pared-down, material proposition rather than a conventional picture.
The blue grid of the paper anchors a hot red rectangle set above a neon-yellow, L-shaped block—both slightly askew with a thin white gap and delicate pencil outlines that make the painted shapes read like cut-paper elements placed on the page.
Made in 1967, the work reflects Weiner’s conceptual practice of treating materials and simple forms as statements, using everyday supports and color to question what an artwork can be and helping to expand the language of minimal and conceptual art.
