Ada & Alex from A Tremor in the Morning
Alex Katz
American, born 1927
1986
A woodcut print that pares two faces down to bold, flat planes and crisp contours to capture an immediate, cinematic intimacy.
What strikes first is the high-contrast economy of black and white—faces cropped close to the picture plane and modelled with flat shapes and precise incisions so the image reads like a frozen film still.
By bringing his pared-down, graphic portrait style into woodcut for a book, Katz bridged modern painting and traditional printmaking and helped renew contemporary approaches to portraiture and illustration.
