Diana
Larry Rivers
American, 1923–2002
1974. (Print executed 1970-74)
A three-dimensional lithograph by Larry Rivers that stages a stylized portrait called “Diana” behind a drawn window, using printmaking to make a face feel both intimate and mediated.
The face is fragmented into four panes—bold black contours and soft gray washes map the hair and features while a single vivid green eye and pale pink lips puncture the muted palette, creating the uncanny sense of being observed through glass.
By fusing graphic, painterly marks with the framing device of a window, Rivers bridges Pop-inflected portraiture and experimental printmaking, showing how prints can construct and complicate identity.
