A 1918 issue of the Berlin avant‑garde periodical Die Aktion, a paper magazine in which the editors and artists used stark woodcut images to marshal political, literary, and visual experimentation.
The cover hits with raw, high‑contrast woodcut strokes: a jagged, almost screaming face beneath the heavy Gothic masthead and the blocky word “BUNT,” where white paper slashes through deep black to create an urgent, carved immediacy.
Die Aktion was a key Expressionist forum that revived the woodcut’s rough power to fuse art and politics, amplifying Central European modernists like Kubicki and reshaping public engagement with avant‑garde ideas.
