From Around a Lake
Richard Long
British, born 1945
1973
A long, horizontal work of leaves on paper in which Richard Long recorded a walk around a lake by pressing and arranging found leaves into a sparse, rhythmic sequence.
What strikes you is the spare, panoramic rhythm—isolated, leaf-shaped forms in warm ochres and browns spaced across a wide field of white so the empty intervals read like measured steps.
Emerging from Land Art and Conceptual practice, it turns a walk and the act of collecting into a minimal drawing that brings ephemeral landscape into the gallery and treats process as the artwork.
