Mel Bochner's ink-on-paper drawing presents two narrow horizontal bands of hand-written numbers edged in blue and orange, using the act of counting as a visual investigation of measurement and language.
A mostly white sheet that at first reads as spare until you notice two ribbon-like rows of tiny red numerals outlined in blue that insist on close, rhythmic reading, their regularity gently disrupted by faint brown stains and the artist’s small inscription in the corner.
By turning enumeration into a visible, drawn system, the piece exemplifies Bochner’s role in conceptual art—making processes of measurement, naming, and perception the material and subject of the work.
