Becoming Is Meaning Like Nothing Is Going from General Dynamic F.U.N.
Eduardo Paolozzi
British, 1924–2005
1965–70, published 1970
An offset lithograph in which Paolozzi translates machine-made repetition into a dazzling field of saturated color, using printed squares and overlays to make pattern feel energetic and tactile.
A hot-pink and red checkerboard of slightly shifted squares seems to shimmer and vibrate, its translucent layers and a narrow yellow-and-red frame producing a pulsing optical depth.
Work like this moves Paolozzi’s collage-driven interest in industrial imagery into print, using commercial printing techniques and bright, mass-produced color to open up new avenues for Op Art, graphic rhythm, and the aesthetics of mechanization.
