Carl Andre

Ana Mendieta

1984
A lithograph from an illustrated book in which Carl Andre turns his sculptural concern with repeated modular units into a page of twelve roughly drawn square forms, exploring rhythm and material presence on paper.
A loose three‑by‑four grid of hand‑worn black outlines—each square slightly irregular, offset, and textured—makes the white paper between them feel as active as the marks, producing a tactile, rhythmic field.
The work shows how a leading minimalist sculptor translated ideas of seriality, modularity, and material presence into the artists’ book, expanding minimalism from site‑specific sculpture to intimate, reproducible prints.
