Brothers (Brüder), illustration to Christian Morgenstern's poem "We Have Found a Path" (Wir fanden einen Pfad) (border, 4th song, folio 42) from the periodical Der Bildermann, supplement to vol. 1, no. 7 (Jul 1916)
Ernst Barlach
German, 1870–1938
1916
A 1916 lithograph by Ernst Barlach that pairs Christian Morgenstern’s poem with two stark, expressionist images to make a moral appeal about brotherhood, compassion, and violence.
The page hits you with rough, charcoal-like strokes: an upper scene of brutal, club-wielding figures and a fallen body contrasted with a lower vignette of a robed, haloed figure sheltering a kneeling child, the printed German text sandwiched between them.
Made during World War I, this work shows Barlach’s expressionist use of printmaking to protest violence and to fuse text and image into a direct, socially engaged visual language in modern periodicals.
