Franz Erhard Walther
German, born 1939
1967
A shallow wooden cabinet holding folded, strap-bound textile pads intended to be taken out, worn, or arranged by viewers as participatory sculpture.
At first glance you see neat stacks of cream canvas cushions and rolls, their straps and knots emphasizing both restraint and the promise of unfolding and use.
Walther transformed sculpture into instruction and action, helping pioneer body-centered, participatory practices that made viewers co‑creators rather than passive observers.
