1949. (Kandinsky woodcut executed 1908-1909; republished posthumously).
An illustrated book (with four woodcuts) published in 1949 by Léo Leuppi that assembles and reflects on eleven modern painters—using spare design and prints to introduce these avant‑garde figures to a postwar audience.
Austerely composed, the page is dominated by a narrow vertical list of names set against generous white space, the oversized, bold word “Arp” interrupting the rhythm and turning typography itself into a focal image.
By treating printed pages and woodcuts as a portable exhibition, the book helped reframe and circulate the reputations of European modernists after World War II and showed how modest graphic publications could act as critical, curatorial gestures.
