Unstable Talismanic Rendering 27 (with gratitude to master marbler Dirk Lange)

Kerstin Brätsch
German, born 1979
2014
An ink and solvent on paper drawing in which Brätsch adapts marbling techniques to conjure pulsating, agate-like forms that probe the tension between chance and artistic control.
At first glance a dark, cell-like mass anchors the sheet while concentric rings and veins of green, purple, copper, and slate radiate outward like a cross between a geode and a cosmic eruption, the colors pooling and separating with uncanny, fluid patterning.
By repurposing traditional paper marbling in a solvent-driven drawing, Brätsch blurs craft and fine art, foregrounds material agency and collaboration, and expands our idea of what drawing and abstraction can be.
