Arcs and Bands in Color
Sol LeWitt
American, 1928–2007
1999/2003
A bold screenprint of overlapping circles and rectangles filled with repeating arcs and vertical bands of saturated color, in which Sol LeWitt applies his systematic, rule-driven method to a playful geometric design.
What strikes you is the flat, intense palette—rainbow stripes and semicircles that interlock and rhythmically push and pull across the white paper, producing a pulsating sense of movement within strict, hard-edged forms.
By translating his serial, instruction-based practice into print, LeWitt marries conceptual rigor with Op‑Art-like color and helped show that idea-driven art could also be vividly decorative and visually kinetic.
