Plate (folio 5) from Book AC
Dieter Roth
Swiss, born Germany. 1930–1998
1958-64, published 1964
A die-cut sheet from Dieter Roth’s artist’s book that uses five precisely cut vertical strips in paper to distill image-making to a quiet, repeating architectural motif and to foreground the book as an object.
You’re struck by five pale, evenly spaced vertical bars set against a dark square—their crisp edges and the surrounding emptiness produce a cool, rhythmic hush and a sense of measured restraint.
By reducing composition to simple cuts and serial repetition, Roth helped expand expectations for artists’ books and Minimalist practice, making the physical handling and material presence of paper central to the work’s meaning.
