Blossoming (Éclosion) from In the Dream (Dans le rêve)
Odilon Redon
French, 1840–1916
1879
A lithograph on chine appliqué from Redon’s In the Dream portfolio that presents a solitary, dreamlike head—an attempt to render an interior vision or psychological apparition.
You’re struck by a pale, anguished profile thrust forward from a dense, circular mass of scratchy blacks and dripping hair, as if a face were budding out of shadow.
Executed at the height of Symbolism, this print helped push printmaking toward intimate, subconscious imagery and foreshadowed later Surrealist interests in dreams and inner life.
