Untitled from The Temple
Luc Tuymans
Belgian, born 1958
1996
An aquatint print by Luc Tuymans that pairs a heavy black field with a bleached, photograph-like interior to probe memory, absence, and the uncertain authority of images.
A stark black rectangle dominates the upper half, while below a pale, washed-out corridor and a barely articulated standing figure appear like a half-remembered photograph fading at the edges.
Tuymans’s muted, restrained images helped shift late-20th-century art toward an investigation of how painting and printmaking can register historical and psychological uncertainty rather than straightforward depiction.
