Tape Project
Jaime Davidovich
American, born Argentina. 1936–2016
1970
A mixed-media work that juxtaposes a broad panel of corrugated tape with a tiny painted television, using modest materials to make visible television's outsized presence in daily life.
Your eye is first caught by the warm, vertically striped expanse of corrugated material occupying the left half, then travels across a wide white field to a small, toy-like TV with a vivid red screen anchored low at the right, creating a tense play of scale and emptiness.
By pairing industrial, everyday materials with the icon of the television, Davidovich connects Minimalist restraint to a pointed critique of mass media and anticipates his later pioneering work in video and public-access television.
