Untitled from Point of Departure
Michael Gitlin
South African, born 1943
1991
An etching and aquatint from a bound album in which Michael Gitlin pares forms to a single tilted yellow plane and assertive black strokes to suggest spatial tension and a 'point of departure'.
A vivid, irregular yellow block appears to float on the white page, its uneven edges and rough, calligraphic black bars cutting into the space like a hinge or opened door.
Rooted in late‑20th‑century minimalist and conceptual printmaking, the work demonstrates how spare printed shapes and gestures can create architectural space and imply movement or transition without narrative.
