Untitled
Anthony Barboza
American, born 1944
1965
A black-and-white street photograph printed on silver gelatin paper in which Barboza layers reflections and figures to evoke the overlapping, fleeting lives of the city.
You first notice a seated older woman seen through a shop window—her profile, a paper cup held out, and the blurred motion of passersby and stacked objects all fused into a ghostly, collage-like scene.
Made in 1965 and connected to the Kamoinge Workshop, the image expanded street photography by using reflection and montage to probe urban anonymity, memory, and the poetic realities of Black city life.
