David Reed
American, born 1946
1972
An oil-on-canvas painting in which David Reed pours, drags, and lets liquid pigment run down a tall, narrow support to translate the tempo and shimmer of cinematic motion into paint.
You first notice towering vertical drips and swaths—brilliant teals, neon greens, ochres and rust—layered and scraped so color seems to stream, glow, and flicker as if caught mid‑movement.
Reed’s work of the early 1970s reopened painting to gesture, spectacle, and temporal rhythm—bridging Abstract Expressionist energy, Color Field luminosity, and cinematic sensibility and pointing toward later process- and performance-inflected painting.
