Side Chair (model DKR-1)
Charles Eames
American, 1907–1978
1951
A 1951 side chair with a sculpted, padded leather seat mounted on a delicate black wire 'Eiffel' base, made to marry industrial materials and production with domestic comfort.
The warm, smooth leather shell seems to float above a spidery, geometric lattice of thin metal rods, creating an immediate contrast between sensuous form and engineered lightness.
A hallmark of mid‑century design by the Eameses, this piece helped show how molded seats and simple metal frameworks could be mass‑produced to bring elegant, comfortable modern furniture into everyday life.
