Untitled from Kartinki-Voina russkikh s nemtsami (Russia's War with the Germans in Pictures)
c. 1914
A hand-colored lithograph that satirizes German militarism by depicting a pompous, caricatured officer—styled to recall Frederick the Great—standing amid comic details.
Flat, posterlike areas of watercolor and gouache sit inside bold lithographed outlines, so the oversized red cuffs, green stockings, powdered wig, small chained dogs and a hanging cameo read at once as ornamental and absurd.
Produced around 1914 as part of a popular wartime picture series, it uses folk-print aesthetics and caricature to mobilize feeling and record Russian popular responses to the outbreak of World War I.
