Woman by the Grapevine (Femme au cep de vigne) from Twelve Original Lithographs by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Douze lithographies originales de Pierre-Auguste Renoir)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
French, 1841–1919
c. 1904, published 1919
A small, intimate lithograph by Pierre-Auguste Renoir showing a standing nude beside a grapevine, made as a sketchlike study to celebrate the sensuous curves and painterly touch of the body in print.
What strikes you is the soft, smoky handling—feathery lines and gentle tonal washes—that makes the figure glow against a few suggestive strokes of foliage while much of the sheet remains open and airy.
Executed late in Renoir’s career for a portfolio of twelve lithographs, the print shows how an Impressionist translated his attention to touch, light, and sensuality into printmaking and helped revive interest in intimate, painterly prints in the early twentieth century.
