60 Minutes
William Anastasi
American, 1933–2023
1987
A monumental, hour-long pencil drawing in which Anastasi amassed countless looping marks to record time and motion as a textured field.
The surface reads like a vibrating gray atmosphere—hundreds of fine, interlacing pencil strokes that build into a denser horizontal band, so the sheet reads simultaneously as fragile scribble and concentrated, blurred horizon.
By making drawing a durational, performative act, Anastasi links conceptual and process art—transforming repetitive, everyday marks into a visible record of time, movement, and the artist’s hand.
