Untitled (No. 206)
Bob Duran
American, 1938–2005
1977
An abstract study in synthetic polymer paint on paper in which Duran arranges interlocking vertical shards to probe rhythm, weight, and the contrast between dense black marks and translucent washes.
You first notice a rhythmic forest of jagged, upright shapes that overlap like a collapsed cityscape, their edges alternately sharp and feathered as opaque blacks sit against pale gray and blue washes.
Created in 1977, the work reflects a late‑20th‑century move to blur drawing and painting—using industrially formulated polymer on paper—to expand pictorial techniques and the expressive possibilities of everyday materials.
