Untitled
Günther Förg
German, 1952–2013
1987
A small 1987 ink-on-colored-paper work in which Günther Förg lays down broad, vertical black strokes against a warm ochre ground to make the physical act of mark-making the subject.
You first notice a dense, nearly black field scored with vertical streaks that reveal the paper beneath and a narrow unpainted left margin—an austere rhythm of scraped texture and weight.
Working between drawing and painting, Förg’s restrained, gestural surfaces reframe postwar abstraction by emphasizing process, materiality, and the uneasy balance of control and accident.
