Hanne Darboven
German, 1941–2009
1970-73
A sequence of twenty-eight typewritten-and-ink-on-paper panels in which Hanne Darboven systematically records numbers, dates, and small texts to measure and visualize the passage of time.
At first glance it appears as a pale, austere grid stretching across many sheets, and up close the tiny, repetitive typewritten numerals, shaded blocks, and penciled marks form a rhythmic, ledger-like accumulation that turns time into a delicate visual pattern.
The work is a key example of Darboven’s calendar-based serial practice that transformed chronological systems into minimalist, conceptual drawings, opening new ways for artists to represent duration, repetition, and the translation of language and number into visual form.
