Plate (folio 11) from Beginning Being an Engine
Terry Winters
American, born 1949
2020
A two-color woodcut from an illustrated book in which Terry Winters layers carved marks and inks to conjure a dense, generative field that reads like a living architecture or data map.
The page seems to vibrate—red underprinting and black dots, arcs, and grids coalesce into a tunnellike, pulsating space that pulls the eye inward and feels at once organic and methodical.
Winters links traditional printmaking craft with contemporary abstraction and systems thinking, using the tactile woodcut to make visible the aesthetics of biology, networks, and perception within the intimate format of a book.
