Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China
Zhu Pei
Chinese, born 1962
2016–2020
A pencil-on-paper architectural sketch in which Zhu Pei explores site layout, sectional ideas, and cultural references for a museum at Jingdezhen’s historic imperial kilns.
Loose, overlapping graphite strokes immediately strike you—an aerial plan of rectangular volumes and pathways at the top, handwritten Chinese notes, and small, delicate elevation sketches (including pagoda-like silhouettes) along the bottom that mix plan-making with evocative imagery.
The drawing shows how hand sketching still shapes architectural thought, translating the craft and memory of Jingdezhen’s kiln history into a contemporary museum proposal that bridges urban planning, form, and cultural narrative.
