Alila Yangshuo Hotel, Yangshuo, Guilin, Guangxi, China
Dong Gong
Chinese, born 1972
2013–2017
A pencil-and-crayon on paper architectural sketch by Dong Gong that quickly explores how a hotel approach and buildings might sit within Yangshuo’s karst landscape, using loose marks and notes to work out composition and circulation.
What strikes you first is the strong receding roadway that drags the eye toward softly suggested, towering karst peaks, while energetic strokes, smudges, and handwritten annotations give the scene a spontaneous, in‑progress quality.
The drawing shows how hand sketching remains a vital tool in contemporary architecture—mediating program, place, and feeling—and exemplifies a site-sensitive approach that links modern design to the distinctive topography of Guilin.
