Carpenter's Square
Julian Lethbridge
British, born 1947
2021
A large oil and oil-stick painting in which Julian Lethbridge layers gestural swirls of pale blues, grays, and whites over a faint diagonal grid to reconcile spontaneous mark‑making with measured structure.
You first notice a shimmering field of repeated, almost floral brush loops that seem to vibrate and shift, with thin diagonal lines threading through like a subtle woven or rippling lattice.
By pitting expressive, indexical marks against an implied carpentered order, Lethbridge extends the language of postwar abstraction—probing how structure and memory coexist on the painted surface.
