Marginalia 7
Iñaki Bonillas
Mexican, born 1981
2019
An inkjet print in which Bonillas assembles found and archival photographs into a stepped, collage-like border around a deep black center, probing how peripheral images accumulate meaning.
A vast, velvety black field is interrupted by a zigzag ribbon of small sepia and black-and-white photographic fragments—sculpted heads, object details and architectural bits—that read like marginal notes circling an empty middle.
By treating discarded and archival photographs as marginalia, the piece joins a lineage of photographic montage and appropriation that interrogates how archives, collectors, and museums shape memory, authorship, and cultural value.
