Goalie Mask
Tony Esposito
Canadian, born 1943
c. 1969
A molded polyethylene and canvas goalie mask made around 1969 to protect the wearer’s face while remaining lightweight and ventilated.
It reads like a stark, white, stylized face—smooth, contoured surfaces pierced by oval eyeholes and geometric vents, the canvas straps adding a utilitarian, almost surgical detail.
An early plastic sports-protection object, it shows how synthetic materials reshaped safety equipment and turned functional gear into a powerful visual icon in sport and design.
