Fabric (no. 13308)
Marli Ehrman
American, born Germany. 1904–1982
c. 1940
A woven cotton fabric sample by Marli Ehrman, made around 1940 to translate modernist weaving ideas into a restrained, functional textile for upholstery or drapery.
From a distance it reads as a warm, pale-yellow field, but close up the surface resolves into finely regular, narrow striations of lighter thread and a tactile weave that gives the cloth a subtle shimmering rhythm, its raw fringed edges reminding you of the hand in the work.
The piece shows how Bauhaus‑trained designers like Ehrman adapted handweaving principles for mid‑century industrial production, shaping the quiet, economical patterns and textures central to modern interior design.
