Tadaaki Kuwayama
American, born Japan. 1932–2023
1977
A large square work in metallic paint on canvas with aluminum in which Kuwayama reduces painting to a cool, industrial silver surface divided into four exact quadrants, aiming to make material, edge, and light the subject rather than brushwork or representation.
At first glance you see a nearly uniform silvery field whose only interruptions are hairline seams forming a precise cross, so the slightest change in light or viewing angle becomes the work’s visible event.
Situated within minimalist and post‑painterly practice, this piece stresses industrial materials, precise format, and perceptual experience, helping to shift painting away from narrative or gestural expression toward pure surface and objecthood.
