"Art Now"
Tadanori Yokoo
Japanese, born 1936
1971
An offset-lithograph poster from 1971 in which Tadanori Yokoo assembles a hallucinatory collage of a classical nude, tropical photography, and pop-graphic motifs to promote the idea of contemporary art.
Your eye bounces between the soft, reclining nude in the foreground and the sunlit, comic‑dotted seascape behind her, while clashing scales—gleaming fruit, milkshakes, palm fronds, and a cartoon cloud—create a surreal, advertising-inflected dreamscape.
Mixing ukiyo-e sensibilities, pop art devices, and commercial graphic design, Yokoo helped forge a distinctly Japanese visual language of the late 1960s–70s that blurred the boundaries between fine art, mass media, and consumer imagery.
