Style/Natura Morta No. 9
Denis Masi
American, born 1942
1973
A collotype print of a softly upholstered armchair in which the artist isolates a familiar domestic object to explore how light, shadow, and texture can transform everyday form.
You first notice the slatted sunlight slicing across the curved armrests and cushion, the stripes turning smooth leather into a landscape of sheen and shadow that makes the chair read like a quiet, sculptural presence.
By photographing a commonplace object with the tonal subtlety of collotype and a close, still-life framing, the work connects classical still-life concerns to 20th‑century photographic experiments in design, materiality, and the uncanny domestic.
